New Product Development Engineering Manager

Job Description
This position is responsible for managing a team of Application Engineers, Competency Engineers, and Project Managers to design and manage project delivery for all platform products, customer specific designs, and for productivity improvements.

Responsibilities & Duties

Incorporate divisional strategic vision (relative to blend of ETO and platform offerings) into product planning and specific product designs

Guide and coach team through adoption and transitional phases of platform development including sales collaboration and market research, design practice, risk analysis (technical and commercial), testing and validation, performance trade-off studies, cost studies, supplier selections, engineering process development, manufacturing process development, catalog selection and pricing methods, and sales campaign support

Drive design and automation based productivity projects to improve operational excellence and reduce operations cost by minimum of $1M/year

Define and assure proper use of distinctly different engineering processes used to quote, engineer, and manufacture a product depending on the products position between fully customized and fully standardized platform offerings; with standard platforms not requiring any redundant work for quoting or design

Design manufacturing equipment to match the product design (both product and process portions of the Design for Manufacturing, DFM, method). Design and build small presses, work tables, material handling, and other assembly equipment. Setup material management supermarkets and kitting areas as appropriate. Assist with plant design and layout and project manage the implementation. Build a strong working relationship with the operations team to facilitate joint ownership of automation projects, knowledge ownership, and documentation. Specify equipment, write appropriation requests, install, and train as necessary.

Use formal risk reduction and documentation techniques such as Design/Process Failure Modes Effects Analysis (DFMEA/PFMEA)

Management of engineering team in regards to projects, schedules, and workloads

Train team in the latest project management methods and use to deploy all projects, NPD team should be known for fastest, most efficient roll-outs of any new product or process

Document all product designs, manufacturing processes, and quality requirements utilizing the latest tools for CAD/CAM and Product Data Management (PLM/PDM)

Providing designs that meet industry requirements as well as internal requirements for cost effectiveness, accuracy, functionality, performance, and reliability

Develop and work with the engineering teams on their projects

Assisting quality, production, sales, and marketing in designing new and improved products

Assisting manufacturing in troubleshooting manufacturing related problems

Maintaining design requirements, bills of material, schematics, and all necessary documentation for sales and production of the product

Investigating equipment failures and to devise corrective actions, incorporate lessons learned into new designs, or build processes to prevent in the future

Continuous improvement, value engineering, product research and development

Work with the Engineering Team to determine cost, function, and design for platform based refrigeration equipment

Create equipment quotations including the descriptive technical specifications and pricing

Work with Product Engineering to determine and create equipment bills of material

Assist Product Engineering with the creation of accompanying submittal drawings

Acting as our customer’s internal advocate to help manage job issues, customer changes, and any other events that require information exchange between us, our suppliers, and our customers

Assisting Contractors and Engineering Consultants with using and designing in the company’s equipment

Creating piping schematics and other required mechanical drawings

Creating electrical schematics and other required control drawings

Validating equipment bills of materials

Correctly size, apply, and specify various refrigeration components.

Work with Materials, Suppliers, and Manufacturing on material requirement and substitutions

Value Engineering and Product Innovation

Provide technical assistance to Customers, Suppliers, Outside Sales, Manufacturing, Field Service, Purchasing, and Quality Control

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 8 to 15 years of Engineering experience

Master’s degree in business or technical field preferred

Strong leadership and team building skills coupled with excellent interpersonal and communication skills as this is a technical leadership position

Good problem solver with the ability to analyze data, formal problem solving certification(s) preferred (Shainin, DOE, Six Sigma, Robust, etc.)

Problem Solving - Identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner; Gathers and analyzes information skillfully; Develops alternative solutions; Works well in group problem solving situations; Applies critical reasoning to making decisions

Proficient in Microsoft Office suite.

Industry knowledge in the following areas preferred:

Product management experience defining products based on performance trade-offs and marketing information

Manufacturing Engineering and Automation Techniques

Retail and Industrial refrigeration design

Controls architecture and design

CO2 refrigeration systems

Ammonia refrigeration systems

Solid Works and / or AutoCAD, PDM/PLM data control tools

Heat Transfer

Fluid Mechanics

Excellent project management skills and multi-tasking, PMI certification a plus

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to effectively communicate with all levels and functional areas

Quality Management - Looks for ways to improve and promote quality; understands the importance of details

Continuous improvement methods and certifications preferred, Six Sigma, Lean, Value Stream Mapping, Process Documentation, etc.

Basic understanding of manufacturing finance practices and ability to reduce cost based engineering improvements

Willing and able to travel up to 25% of the time as necessary for customer and supplier interactions
